Much like Marilyn Monroe, Carole Lombard continues to intrigue even decades after her believe untimely death. An actress skilled at drama but showing a positive preference for comedy, Lombard mixed her pretty beauty with a genuinely rapidly wit and a intelligent, sarcastic intelligence. On hide, she was someone who, even at her most vulenerable, could unruffled obviously consume care of herself. Whereas the joy from watching Katharine Hepburn’s screwball comedies came from seeing the haughty Hepburn brought down a notch or two, the joy of Lombard’s films was watching her force the rest of the world to approach up a few notches to meet her.

One of her most enduring (and endearing) turns came in the 1936 film Nothing Sacred. In a space recycled in countless films since, Lombard is mistakenly told that she is dying. A small-town girl, Lombard’s one wish is to witness Fresh York before she dies. Natrually, Modern York’s high society welcomes her with originate arms and Lombard, on fable of her impending death, becomes the toast of the town. Of course, this is when Lombard finds out that she’s not dying. This is where Nothing Sacred differs from nearly every other film ripped off from it since. Instead of humbly admitting the truth, once-innocent Lombard carries on the charade because she’s grown to cherish the attention! Whereas in today’s Hollywood, nervous studio execs would wonder if this made Lombard an unlikeable character for middle America, the classic screwball comedies of the ’30s had the guts to simply go with their putrid situations. Instead of simply going out of their plan to conform to presumed audience expectations, filmmakers like Howard Hawks and William A. Wellman (who directed this film in a nicely breezy style) understood that if they simply went to the disaster to 1) obtain a profitable script and 2) cast talented performers like Lombard, audiences would be willing to follow their films wherever they led. To be just, I suspect audiences haven’t changed but unfortunately, filmmaking has. The screwball comedy is a genre that fresh Hollywood tries to recreate every couple of years. Usually, they fail. Luckily, we have films like Nothing Sacred, My Man Godfrey, 20th Century, and others to remind us of how extraordinary these films (and their stars) truly were.

NOTHING SACRED has all the legal elements to accomplish it a classic screwball comedy. It’s short (a mere 74 minutes), has tight and speedy scenes, some out-of-the-blue and very unusual occurences (as mentioned by others, the boy biting March is a riot), stars who aren’t terrorized to rep laughable or messy to invent the best laugh, and a strong, scathing message.

Ben Hecht’s script is superb, providing many belly laughs during the movie, and chuckles long after the VCR or DVD player has been shut off. Carole Lombard is her hilarious wacky self. I admire sad and white movies, but I must admit the Technicolor really allowed me to relish her beefy beauty. And as for Fredric March, well, I’ve always had a sweet dwelling for his acting, and he certainly didn’t disappoint in this production. He and Lombard balance each other out perfectly. And, as was characteristic of the huge comedies of the 30s, the supporting characters excel in their roles to round out a practically perfect comedy.

As far as the film itself, there were three aspects that I particularly enjoyed. One being the proper, in your face idea of male/female relationships. The bedroom fighting scene between March and Lombard is hilarious, one of the highlights of the movie, but would never gain it on veil in any of today’s movies. In today’s movie world where you can’t offend ANYONE (except Christians or Republicans), and you usually can’t display any kind of physical humor toward women (yet it’s OK to beat the guy to a pulp), the un-PC nature of this 60+ year passe production gives it unexpected freshness.

A second exclusive point is the change in the romantic comedy formula. You know, it almost always goes boy meets girl, boy and girl are together for awhile having a jim-dandy time, boy and girl atomize up after tiff or misunderstanding of some sort, boy or girl makes a witty, cutesy speech to accept them succor together. This movie changes at least the last section of that formula to focus the last request from “How will they acquire abet together? ” to “How will they fetch out of the plight together? “. Nice limited twist.

A final spellbinding aspect was the deliberate hiding of Lombard and March’s faces during most of their more intimate scenes. This is fitting considering the movie was a rail against the mass media’s need to sensationalize and exploit every intimate thing (and the masses’ willingness to happily join in the explotation) .

I saw this film at a preview screening at the High Museum in Atlanta. Although I am not a WWII history buff, and often fetch war documentaries to be unimaginative, this was certainly not the case with this film! I found the narrative very compelling and in fact, was moved to tears by the slay of it. Not only did it finish high artistic standards, but the tale was told with humor and compassion. The wealth of archival footage, including home movies, was very impressive and it gave the film a more personal feeling than your average war documentary. The fact that the filmmaker’s father was one of the main pilots also gave it extra emotional resonance. I highly recommend this film; even an anti-war person like myself came away with a feeling of pride for what these people accomplished, and an even deeper respect for those who sacrificed for our country.

“Flying The Secret Sky” is a 75-minute documentary showcasing The British RAF’s microscopic known activities in transporting military aircraft from North America to England before America’s entrance into World War II. This risky and secretive aspect of military aviation in 1940 preceded America’s entry into the war and was piece of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s assistance to Britain’s efforts to defend themselves against Hitler’s attacks. “Flying The Secret Sky” is the epic of dedicated, risk-taking young pilots who flew across a wartime Atlantic in unarmed aircraft as told by the flyers in their gain words. Of special effect is the American civilian pilot who transported Winston Churchill. Enhanced with a profusion of previously unseen home movies and rare footage of Ferry Protest aircraft and crews, “Flying The Secret Sky” is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Aviation History and World War II European Theatre DVD collections.

Bruce Campbell seems to have a kind of love/hate thing going with his fan detestable. Certain, like any actor he enjoys having fans, but as he’s stated in his book and elsewhere that his fans can procure a bit contemptible and push things far. This seems to be what sparked My Name Is Bruce. Here he pokes fun at his fandom as well as his career.

In the film he plays Bruce Campbell, but a more fictional Bruce Campbell. He’s egocentric, a drunk, lives in a trailer, un-liked and un-respected by the cast and crew of his films, and fair an all around jerk. A teen in a runt gold mining town called Gold Lick has mistakenly unleashed the worn Chinese god of war, Guan-Di, and now the wrathful god is killing off the folks of Gold Lick. The teen, Jeff, also happens to be a Bruce Campbell fanatic. He manages to kidnap Campbell and bring him to Gold Lick where he has convinced the townspeople that Bruce will kill the faulty demon. Bruce is under the impression that he’s doing some kind of movie(it doesn’t totally invent sense why he’d assume that he’s in a movie when there’s no film crew around or why the townspeople would acquire that a apprehension movie actor could really be a ghost buster, but who cares? ) . He goes coward when the reality of the residence becomes distinct, but soon learns how to be the Bruce Campbell he’s always portrayed himself to be. I know what you’re thinking! My wife tapped my shoulder half procedure through the movie and said to me, “this reminds me a lot of the Three Amigos”. Fair, it’s a very similar concept-the notion of egocentric actors finding themselves in actual effort when they reflect they’re only in “reel” distress, but in the ruin scrutinize that they are heroes.

Needless to say it is a fun movie. Naturally we’re dealing with a comedy here, not a dread film. While the laughs are hit and miss, some of them predictable and a bit cliched, this movie really works because of Bruce. We all know that Bruce has a helluva shroud charisma and can singlehandedly carry practically any movie impartial off of his charm. He also directed this movie. It’s grievous budget of course, and Bruce certainly makes the best of that. He built the town of Gold Lick on his bear property in Oregon. The supporting cast is decent too, mostly unknowns. Ted Raimi has multiple roles, each a different nationality, allowing him try multiple accents. His Asian character honest isn’t comical though. Too noteworthy of a stereotype Chinese guy. He reminded me of Mickey Rooney in Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

It’s spacious how Campbell makes fun of his fans and fandom, yet doesn’t totally insult them. He’s also able to recall potshots at himself and his career. At one point he steals a kid’s bike to bag away from Guan-Di, and the kid yells at him, “McHale’s Navy sucked!!” Humorous stuff. He really lays into his flop, Alien Apocalypse, but thinly disguises it here as a film called Cave Alien. Plus there are many more in-jokes that you will definitely recall up on if you’re familiar with many of Campbell’s films.

Campbell is touring the country fair at the moment showing the film and doing 20-30 minutes Q&A sessions after. I’d highly suggest attending this if possible. It’s suited serve for Bruce as well as shameful budget cinema in general. Plus the man is a treat to recognize and hear in person. Objective as laughable and charming as you consider he’d be.

One of the best Bruce Campbell films made. There’s no need to rant and rave – if you indulge in his films, you must peer this one. No, you must fill this one. Bits and pieces (pardon the pun), pokes and prods of the best and worst of the Bruce Campbell legacy. There’s a cramped something for everyone – seek candy for Bruce wanna-be’s; quaint locales and characters for those who are into scenic adventure; droll creativity from the understated Ted Raimi; and a watch at the current panicked side of an even sexier Campbell. It’s painful to be given a sneek glance at something incredible and then have to wait over a month to be able to gain it, but harm is piece of the beauty of a Campbell venture, isn’t it?

Those questions lie at the heart of “Spiral,” an intricate mystery series with solid animation, a compellingly black mystery…. and no ending. Despite a determined lack of answers at the finale, it is a solid anime, with well-drawn characters, wonderful art and some nail-biting suspense during a few of these arcs.

Two years ago, Ayumu Narumi got a phone call from his older, genius brother Kiyotaka. He announced he was investigating the “Blade Children,” and then vanished.

Much later, a girl named Sayoko falls from a balcony — and Ayumu seems like the only possible suspect, even though the police inspector is his sister-in-law Madoka. But Ayumu has the same fantastic analytical skills as his older brother, and he soon solves a pair of crimes connected to Sayoko — her tumble, and a locked-room abolish — only to glean that they both involve the Blade Children.

Unfortunately, the Blade Children are getting fervent in Ayumu — first a “shimmering bomb” is planted in a piano concert, and then a outlandish boy lures Ayumu to an abandoned school, playing a deadly game with the young genius. And after a teacher is murdered, Ayumu is pulled into a deadly mind game with a precocious Blade Child. She sabotages his self-esteem, and then snares him into a deadly cat-and-mouse game.

But even as Ayumu outwits the Blade Children, he learns that another deadly faction is fervent with the Blade Children — the Hunters, who end them and anyone they are allied with. Even worse, he has a original enemy among the Blade Children — Kanone, a young man who believes that the Blade Children “must not live.” And since Ayumu may be their only hope, he is now Kanone’s enemy…

“Spiral” starts delving into the mystery of the Blade Children literally from the first scene, with Kiyotaka’s parting words. Those expecting lots of action, slapstick and flashy superspecial powers will probably be bored by this smarter notice of anime: the confrontations usually kill in nothing more spectacular then a scuffle, and the only special powers Ayumu has are his luminous ones.

While the writers don’t really roar powerful, they do high-tail a web of clever, sparkling mysteries, with magic squares, explosive neckwear, bombs, mystery future killings, card tricks and an abandoned hotel rigged with explosives all throughout it. Some of these are glowing hard to figure out, despite their simplicity.

And when Ayumu isn’t pondering mysteries, the episodes are peppered with comedy (in one scene, Hiyono keeps distracting Ayumu as he tries to rep an arcade toy for her) and flashbacks that exhibit the characters’ pasts. And though we don’t come by out what the jam with the Blade Children is, the episodes are infused by a sense of ominous hopelessness, but you never quite pity them yet because of their casual brutality.

There are a few problems, though — for one thing, the second half of the series seems powerful more dependent on immense kabooms than simple mind games and murders. The mindwork is unexcited there, but not as prominent. And… there’s no ending. We never learn what the Blade Children are, where they came from, or why the Hunters loathe them so.

Daniel Katsük does an ample job with both Ayumu’s laid-back, unemotional demeanor, and his inner turmoil. While it’s hard to really be sympathetic to someone who has so many natural gifts, he makes it understandable that Ayumu would feel so inappropriate to his seemingly perfect brother. Caitlin Glass’ Hiyono is rather annoying and hyperactive (“Thank you God, for blessing us with these awesome seats”), but Gwendolen Lau is helpful as the gutsy, vulnerable Madoka.

And the voicework for the Blade Children is ravishing uniformly sterling — John Burgmeier and Greg Ayres are genuine as the sorrowful Eyes Rutherford and the devilish Kousuke. Laura Bailey is top-notch as the gutsy runner Ryoko, and Monica Rial is solid as the girlish, ruthless Rio. I’m not certain if Kanone is supposed to have that brick-thick Southern accent, though.

“Spiral” winds into a mystery that it never really leaves, but the intricate storyline and suspense are definitely worth checking out. A nice series if you don’t mind finding the ruin elsewhere.

Bad Points:

-During the whole series the watcher repeatedly hears the put a question to “Who are the blade children? ” At the waste, we level-headed are not given the acknowledge to this. There are too many loose ends left at the demolish of the anime. Even if you wished to contemplate the anime, and then read the ending in manga- you cannot! To my knowledge, the manga which this series is based off of is not available in English! I resorted to reading the Wikipedia page, which is remarkable less consuming than finding out the answers in record invent.

-Some of the characters tend to be annoying, or one dimensional. The main character, Ayumu, I peaceful felt wintry towards at the slay of the series. While some of the characters I can characterize to and sympathize with, or at least understand, the main character (of all people!) seems undefined. The girl who follows him around everywhere also remains undefined, and worse yet, has a tell that makes me want to nick off my ears.

-The minor area lines tend to net uninteresting. I can stand ‘Sherlock Holmes’ but the mysteries in this series are too monotonous for me. They inch out, and seem to collect in the procedure of the actual storyline.

So by now I’ve given a bleak review, factual? Than it’s time for the top-notch points, though they be few in my eyes.

-The artwork was glowing and so was the music accompanying it. Who doesn’t be pleased honorable art in an anime? The men and woman were all blooming without being contrivance over glamorous, and I fancy the scenes where piano playing is keen.

-The storyline doesn’t seem to drop under the average overdone plots in anime. There are no giant robots, half-human half-demons, dirt-poor wandereres, etc. “Spiral” is more unique than most anime out there, focusing on the genre of mystery.

-Some of the more principal secondary characters seem to be well-formed, although Ayumu and his sidekick were not. I could really narrate to them, and they seemed similar to characters I was writing about in my NaNoNovel. I was more concerned with where their futures where heading than the main character’s. When Ayumu almost got stung by bees (which he is deathly allergic to) I honestly didn’t care if he died or not. Not because I’m heartless folks, objective because Ayumu didn’t seem valid enough to me.

As you can witness, IMHO “Spiral” does not have worthy going for it. The lack of answers at the destroy handsome mighty sucked the beauty out of the series for me. Like an idiot I was taken in by all the attractive advertisements. If you are philosophize with loose ends and cliff hangers, than this series if for you.

The Wanderers is many things…an urban gang drama, juvenile comedy, changing of the times glimpse and more. It works on all these levels and has become a certified cult classic. At it’s core, the Wanderers is about the final death of the innocence of the 1950’s. The Wanderers are an Italian gang in NY, detached clinging to the last vestiges of the 1950’s with their matching satin jackets and grease-backed hair. Early on several members hurry afoul of another gang, the eminent ‘Baldies’. The Wanderers obtain themselves trapped until a newcomer, the titanic Perry saves them and is immediately welcomed into the gang by their leader Richie (Ken Wahl) .

The various members of the Wanderers have problems to deal with on their acquire. Mixed in with the drama and action is a liberal amount of juvenile buddy comedy as the Wanderers ‘accidently’ bumb into women on the street in order to touch their breasts. This is how the meet Nina (karen Allen) a bohemian girl who Richie becomes infatuated with. There there are drunken parties, games of strip poker, etc. In one memorable scene, the drunken Baldies join the marines.

Through all of this is the theme of the changing of the times. The doo-wop of the 1950’s is now being replaced by folk music. A poignant scene has Richie following Nina until she enters a club where (in sound anyway) Bob Dylan is playing. Richie doesn’t enter as he seems to know that it’s unprejudiced not his world. The film also covers the assasination of John Kennedy as the symbolic death of innocence. It is this moment the galvanizes the strained relationship between Despie and Richie.

One wishes that the Ducky Boys had been better explained. They are a creepy group of men..older than the other gangs…who never remark and were actually seen taking Holy Communion in one fraction where Turkey enters their turf by mistake and his killed. What were the Ducky Boys representing? It’s the one mystery of the film.

The Wanderers has a astonishing soundtrack of early 1960’s hits including “Soldier Boy”, “Plug Like a Man”, “Runaround Sue”, “Yell”, “Great Girls don’t Bellow” and of course the title track.

This is a movie that holds up unexcited after 25 years because it works well on so many different levels. This was mostly a cast of unknowns with Karen Allen perhaps being the most important star a year after she did ‘Animal House’. An luscious movie from beginning to waste.

“The Wanderers” is a class act and a stylish movie that has a brassy toughness to it that is both infectious and enchanting. It was probably overshadowed on it’s release by the other gang movie of 1979 “The Warriors”, but “The Wanderers” easily holds an equal footing as an reliable period fraction of working class lives in 1963. The film centres around the lives of a gang of young boys in the Bronx in mid 1963 coming to terms with friendships, school, girls and other gangs. Ken Wahl ( a promising actor who for some reason never quite made it to the substantial time!! ) plays a titanic lead as the aloof talking and charismatic, Richie, the leader of the Wanderers. Richie is struggling to acquire his gangs strength and location in the local neighbourhood as well as juggling his many relationships with different girlfriends. He meets a young and gorgeous Karen Allen whilst out on the streets with his buddies, and from there another relationship develops. Allen plays her role with style, and even though Allen is not a vast beauty, she has that unmistakable feminine charm, especially when that astounding smile lights up her face.

What makes the movie all the more arresting is the device it goes gradual the scenes into the home lives and the hopes, fears and dreams of some of the gang members. We notice Joey’s artistic talents save down by his fearsome, aggressive father…we gawk Turkey struggle with his acquire identity within the different gangs…and we behold Richie forced to rob responsibility for his actions arrive the film’s conclusion. Backing the movie up, is a dynamite soundtrack containing some top numbers including “Stand by Me”, “Runaraound Sue”, “Soldier Boy” & of course “The Wanderer”!!

A movie that has charm & talent, and stands up to repeated viewings with ease…if you haven’t seen it already….bag up with “The Wanderers” soon!!

I searched in Amazon for instructional video for cruise fishing-anglers. This is what I harm up with. # 1, it’s not instructional, other than you can spy & learn from another’s triumphs & mistakes. From bumper to bumper, it’s a commercial, from boat to gear, what they wear, what they judge. Each program is unbiased like the last, maybe a different boat, different gear. I wouldn’t have celebrated it free, if I could have previewed first.

Roland Martin! Need anyone say more? DVD has all his Versus tv episodes from 2007! I wish they would advance out with Bill Dance & Jimmy Houston dvd’s along the same format! If you admire bass fishing, then you better grab this dvd! A must have!

The L.A. Times has reported that all music rights have apparently cleared, which means that the dvd of this landmark series, unlike Northern Exposure, will withhold the spirit of the recent with its recent soundtrack intact. Other pluses are the creation of a recent master copy (ensuring suitable visual quality) and extensive bonus features, including commentary and interviews. Each subsequent season will be released at six month intervals. All large news for fans who have patiently awaited this release for almost 20 years.

“Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol” has always been my common musical version of Dicken’s classic legend for the simple reason that the songs have been better than all those other versions, including the most current attempt with Kelsey Grammar. I have fair finished watching the display again and I finally noticed that there are only four songs.
